This is exclusively used in "Shōjō," a fifth-group play (goban me mono) that has a demon or goblin for its leading character. Shōjō is a spirit that lives in the sea and loves drinking. In the play, it appears by the Yangtze River at the foot of Mt. Jinshan in China, and treats a dutiful son to a drink. The mask has a ruddy face and disordered hair, suggesting the link with alcohol. It wears the innocent expression of a smiling boy, which is unusual for a Noh mask.
